Some of the major villages and hamlets on the North Shore are Bayville, Centre Island, Cold Springs Harbor, Setauket, Glen Cove, Great Neck, Huntington, Lattingtown, Locust Valley, Manhasset, Northport, Oyster Bay, Brookville, Port Jefferson, Port Washington, Roslyn, Sands Point, Smithtown, and Syosset. While many people work at local Long Island companies, others commute by car or railroad to Manhattan every day for work. The major industries on Long Island include healthcare – with major teaching hospitals in several North Shore towns – software and computing, insurance, warehousing and distribution, and smaller scale building companies.

The cost of Independent Living on Long Island varies from less than $4,000 to over $10,000 per month. This is higher than the national median of $2,500. Assisted Living communities, too, have a wide range of monthly costs – from $3,500 to $12,000 or more per month, depending on the specific facility and the level of care required. Memory Care, which is Assisted Living specifically tailored for people with Alzheimers and other types of dementia, starts at around $6,500 per month and can cost $10,000 per month, again depending on the specific community and the range of care required. While there are not great differences in price between that North Shore and the South Shore, generally slightly lower prices are to be found in Suffolk County, vs Nassau County.
