Senior Housing and Assisted Living on the North Shore
The North Shore of Long Island is one of America’s oldest and most beautiful residential areas. What started as farming communities in the 1600s is now a two-county area filled with beaches on Long Island Sound, fabulous mansions from the turn of the last century, and town after town of comfortable suburban and even exclusive housing developments. Some of the towns on the North Shore include Great Neck, Roslyn, Port Washington, Glen Cove, Brookville, Oyster Bay, Locust Vally, Smithtown, Huntington, and Port Jefferson
Today, the North Shore is divided into over 200 Towns, Villages, and Hamlets. The population of the North Shore is around 1.5 million people. Some of the major villages and hamlets on the North Shore are Bayville, Centre Island, Cold Springs Harbor, Setauket, Glen Cove, Great Neck, Huntington, Lattingtown, Locust Valley, Manhasset, Northport, Oyster Bay, Brookville, Port Jefferson, Port Washington, Roslyn, Sands Point, Smithtown, and Syosset. While many people work at local Long Island companies, others commute by car or railroad to Manhattan every day for work. The major industries on Long Island include healthcare – with major teaching hospitals in several North Shore towns – software and computing, insurance, warehousing and distribution, and smaller scale building companies.
The cost of Independent Living on Long Island varies from less than $4,000 to over $10,000 per month. This is higher than the national median of $2,500. Assisted Living communities, too, have a wide range of monthly costs - from $3,500 to $12,000 or more per month, depending on the specific facility and the level of care required. Memory Care, which is Assisted Living specifically tailored for people with Alzheimers and other types of dementia, starts at around $6,500 per month and can cost $10,000 per month, again depending on the specific community and the range of care required. While there are not great differences in price between that North Shore and the South Shore, generally slightly lower prices are to be found in Suffolk County, vs Nassau County.

400 Sutton Court
Mt Sinai, New York 11766
This is the newest in the group of Assisted Living and Memory Care Communities built and managed by the Bristal Assisted Living organization. The Bristal’s locations are all built as first-class buildings with elegant surrounding and top-quality care. Known for their cuisine, this new location in Mt. Sinai provides top restaurant style meals three times each day. When I toured, residents were preparing for dinner by having a glass of wine while being entertained by a great duo performing 50s and 60s hits.
The Bristal Mt. Sinai has a secure section of the building devoted to the special needs of seniors with dementia due to Alzheimer’s and other disfunctions of the central nervous system. What is unique about the Bristal is that each of these sections for people with cognitive difficulties is a mirror image of the larger area set aside for Assisted Living. They all have a cinema, a hair salon, full activity areas, a craft shop, and a special outdoor space just for these residents. At the Bristal, both residents in Assisted Living and Memory Care get the same services, each delivered in a way appropriate for that group.
This Bristal has also earned an Enhanced license for Assisted Living, the highest level of licensure offered by New York State. This higher level of licensure gives seniors a greater chance of Aging in Place at this Community.

East Northport, New York 11731

This Community features a pool, and the pool deck is the center of social life in the summer. While the weather is good It would not be unusual to have more than one outside musical group entertain each week. The Community has a cinema, a regularly active arts and crafts program, lectures, and the ever-popular Bingo.
This Bristal provides both Assisted Living, which is support for individuals needing assistance with the Activities of Daily Living, and provides care in a separate, secure area for seniors with Dementia due to Alzheimer’s and other conditions.

Are seniors happier in Assisted Living?
Assisted Living is a wonderful opportunity for seniors to make friends, go on chauffeured outings, and get involved in daily activities and hobbies. These communities also offer peace of mind if you are worried about your parent living alone, and prevent seniors from feeling isolated living on their own. This all may lead to a happier and healthier retirement.
Can visitors stay overnight in Assisted Living communities?
Assisted living communities offer lots of different options. Some have guest suites available to rent for visitors. If this is something you would like to have, we can include it in our list of wishes for your new home.
